News from the Wackerlin Center

The Wackerlin Center invites you to continue celebrating the rich and diverse cultures of Hispanic communities during the month of October. If you have yet to visit the exhibit Identity is My Superpower at the Schingoethe Center, it is not too late. Make plans to visit today. In addition, contribute your voice to the Cultural Exchange conversation happening this month, which shares the theme of the exhibit. This important conversation and exhibit present an enriching opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to reflect on the diversity of cultural wealth that we offer to the AU community and how we can make space to include this wealth in all areas on campus!

We are also excited to announce that the Wackerlin Center will bring back two opportunities from the previous year that students have already been asking about: The Revive Retreat and Social Impact Trips. Applications for each of these programs will be made available in mid-October.

You can find more information about each of these programs as well as other events and resources below. If you have any questions about how to engage or partner with the Wackerlin Center, our staff is ready to respond. Please reach out to any of the following offices.

Latino/a Heritage Month

Latino/a Student Initiatives continues to celebrate Latino/a culture and heritage this month. Join us for a Cultural Exchange Conversation:

Cultural Exchange: Identity is my Superpower

Wednesday, October 4  |  10:40–11:45 a.m.
Tapper Recital Hall, Hill Welcome Center

Join Dr. Eva Serrano, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages and Dean Emeritus of Latino/a Student Initiatives, in a celebration of Latino Heritage that invites all participants to an affirming conversation of community cultural wealth.

Housing Resources for Students

The HOUSE Liaison is here to provide resources and support to students struggling with housing or food insecurities. The liaison acts as an intermediary between a student experiencing homelessness and campus services, including financial aid, student support, and residence life. Academic breaks are times when students may be especially at risk of experiencing homelessness. Please take a moment to learn about the role of the HOUSE Liaison and how AU offers support to students, click here.

Participate in AU Safe Zone Training

AU’s Safe Zone Training Program is designed to provide resources to explore topics of gender and sexuality, increase awareness of the experiences of LGBTQ+ identities, and promote inclusive practices that foster a campus climate in which all are welcomed, included, and empowered to thrive. We offer two types of training:

Safe Zone 1.0 — a basic introduction to key issues, statistics, and vocabulary related to the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.

Safe Zone 2.0 — a deeper dive into the complexity of the information presented in 1.0, offering interactive activities that will allow trainees to think more critically about issues as well as their roles in advocacy and/or allyship. Upon completing 2.0, participants will be recognized as official AU allies and presented with an AU Safe Zone sticker to post in their space.

Click here to register for Safe Zone 1.0, Safe Zone 2.0, or both.
